Mm Picks ‘Survival Challenge’ Edition!
13/02/2009
As promised here are our Survival Challenge Mm Picks.
It’s been great fun playing all of these levels and your ingenuity has really impressed us. We’re going to do this again, read the rest of this entry to find out how.
Since this was so much fun, we’re going to do this once every month from now on. So, if you missed your chance to submit your Survival Challenge then please try again.
Since it can be a little difficult to find your Survival Challenges I’m going to set a few little rooley rules, nothing major, just some rules to make it easier for us to find your Survival Challenge and for you to know what’s needed.
- Your level title must contain the abbreviation ‘MmSC’ in the title,
- Your level title must contain the words ‘Survival Challenge’ (spelt correctly!).
That’s it! there, that wasn’t too bad was it:)
Meanwhile, on to the Mm Picks!
Challenge - Plinko Madness
by AchillesPDX
linko Madness! 0.5 : Push the button. Avoid the bombs and collect points as long as you can. It gets faster and faster and you WILL die. The question is - when?
We loved this idea! The way it works is that Score Bubbles and Timed Bombs fall from the top of the screen through a series of pegs that give them a random motion. You never know where the next Timed Bomb will fall! It's a great idea that has lots of playability and some hidden depth which is good for players who want to master it and get high scores. Although it's great as it is, it maybe looks a little drab and the Timed Bombs are a little difficult to see as they come down. Definately my favourite
Little Big Wave
by Overcrook
This is the survival challenge edition of my 'Little Big Wave'. Try to survive as long as possible to beat the highscore, the wave is constantly growing so swim for your life! Have fun and don't forget to heart me if you liked it!
This one impressed us (and worried our physics coders...) with it's impressive use of physics. In this Survival Challenge, you have to ride a gradually growing wave and collect as many score bubbles as possible. It's great to see the physics in action like this and again, it's great fun with 4 players. The only niggles we had is that it was hard to die, or rather, easy to stay alive, maybe throw a few electric balls in there as well?
This one was on our Hmmm list as it is not really a conventional Survival Challenge (as it's easy to stay alive by doing nothing) but we thought it was so ingenuous and original so we Picked it. The idea is that you are a crane operator and you are building a building. Your job is to drop the swinging buildings at the right time in order to stack them, topple the tower and it's all over. Our only complaint is that sometimes the buildings would come out too early and knock our tower :(
Money Factory
by Digi1982
See how long you and your friends can last on the production line. Grab that cash!
Another Discombobulator style level but this one has a conveyor belt that runs both ways so you can go left and right without have to move. The difficulty is a little too much as there are maybe too many electrified bits so maybe one for professional jumpers and dodgers?
Rocket Hurdles: Electric Dusk
by Lokno
A survival challenge where the objective is to pass through electrified hurdles rocketing toward you by shifting layers and jumping. The Electric Dusk version emits 12 hurdles in a fixed pattern.
Any level that Danny plays over and over to get the highest score is definately a keeper. We all liked the originality of this level and the art was well done (good to see Mr Gnome getting some attention). The difficulty ramped up a little too quickly and the ‘hurdles’ could be better defined (maybe with the Metal Gear VR materials) but other than that, a superb Survival Challenge.
SACK RUNNERS
by natecube
a competitive multiplayer mini-game (for 1-4) : Each player runs on a colored treadmill. You control the chaos on your opponents treadmill to keep them from collecting points! Drop fire logs, electrified skulls, or waves of fury to be victorious.
It's great to see a level that caters for 1 player and also 4 players. In this Survival Challenge, Players can either run right for 4 Player fun, or a single Player can run left to play on their own. The level is another Conveyor Belt style level which is nothing new, but playing against 4 players takes it to another level of fun and, dare I say it (oh, go on then), Co-opetition!
Sackcrush 3000
by Treas
This is a simple and fast, yet exciting minigame. Try to survive as long as possible, collecting point bubbles and dodging the SackCrush 3000.
Another great idea that really gets your nerves tingling. In this one you have grab the Score Bubbles before the ‘crushers’ get them, and you! This level really promotes careful play, it’s not a point fest so scoring is slow but that’s cool, it doesn’t always have to be about huge scores. Play with 4 people for a great laugh.
Survival Challenge - Plasma Dome
by markowolfy
Ride your Switch Car to collect bubbles and avoid plasma balls! I fixed a few bugs. It's way better!
Last but not least is Plasma Dome (where's the Dome?). Based on the simple concept of moving back and forwards via a Lever this another Survival Challenge for multiplayer mayhem. Our only problems where that the Lever was the wrong way around (left to go left?) and the colour coded Plasma Balls are not explained which makes it confusing.
Survival: Danglers
by epthegeek
Score based survival challenge. Grab the green ball to start, the platform dissapears after all the lights are lit. Survive as long as you can, swinging on the vines, to collect as many points as possible. Updated to improve playability. by epthegeek
This Survival Challenge uses 'danglers' that move left slowly, the goal is to use them to swing constantly to the right, if you stay too long on a dangler then you plummet into the gas. This is a great concept but we thought it was a little tricky to get from the elasticated danglers to the next dangler (especially if there are multiple players). Would be nice to see this idea extended, as there is plently of room for multiple players.
This one builds on Victor's Discombobulator idea but goes a little further by tilting the whole level. It's gets very crazy as 4 players scramble over all the stuff that slides towards you so play it with as many people as you can for some insane fun. We're not sure it needs that huuuuuge drop at the end though (after you die) but if plummeting is your thing...
